Chair of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association to attend NATO and NATO PA events in Washington, D.C.

From 8 to 11 July 2024, Julie Dzerowicz, MP, Chair of the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association, will be in Washington, D.C. to participate in a number of activities relating to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO, or the Alliance) and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (NATO PA).

Ms. Dzerowicz is travelling as part of the Canadian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Summitwhich is expected to bring together delegates from all 32 NATO member countries and Ukraine, including 23 Speakers of Parliament.

At the NATO Parliamentary Summit, delegates will share their perspectives on a number of topics concerning the Alliance. They include: new ways in which state and non-state actors are attempting to disrupt the rules-based international order; Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine; the strengthening of NATO’s defence and deterrence posture in the Euro-Atlantic region; disinformation campaigns designed to undermine democratic institutions; and the need to safeguard NATO’s shared democratic values. As well, the Canadian delegation will attend the Meeting for Leaders of Parliament and other events, such as a reception hosted by U.S. Congressional leadership and a breakfast organized by the German Marshall Fund and The Boeing Company.

Moreover, in her role as ex-officio Vice-President of the NATO PA, Ms. Dzerowicz will participate in a special meeting of the NATO PA’s Standing Committee. She will also take part in an event entitled Strengthening Security Through Democratic Resilience, This event will be hosted by the United States Institute of Peace and the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance.

On 10 and 11 July 2024, Ms. Dzerowicz will attend the 2024 NATO Public Forum, which will be co-hosted by the Government of the United States, the Atlantic Council, the Center for a New American Society, the German Marshall Fund, GLOBSEC and the Hudson Institute. One objective is to improve the public’s understanding of decisions that NATO leaders will make at the upcoming Washington Summit to address a wide variety of issues facing the Alliance. Among others, Heads of State and Government, government officials, academics and young people will participate in panel discussions, debates and interactive sessions on topics relating to NATO’s agenda at the Washington Summit.

Finally, Ms. Dzerowicz will attend an event hosted by the Truman Library Institute that will celebrate the Alliance’s 75th Anniversary. Keynote speakers are expected to be Julianne Smith, U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, and General Charles Q. Brown, Jr, U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
