Canadian Parliamentarians meet with the NATO Secretary General
On 19 June 2024, the Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association hosted a parliamentary roundtable with Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The discussion was moderated by Julie Dzerowicz, Canadian NATO Parliamentary Association Chair.
MP Dzerowicz congratulated Secretary General Stoltenberg on 10 years of extraordinary leadership at a critical juncture for the Alliance. Since the Secretary General’s appointment in 2014, NATO has had to confront a changed international security environment, including as a result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Throughout, the Alliance has adapted and remained united.
The Secretary General briefed parliamentarians on preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington, which will address deterrence and collective defence, allied support for Ukraine, and NATO’s global partnerships. The Secretary General also emphasized the essential roles that parliamentarians play in turning decisions about defence and security into action.
A wide range of other issues were discussed during the question period, including:
- the war in Ukraine;
- defence spending and production;
- burden sharing among NATO countries;
- NATO’s northern flank;
- hybrid threats; and
- authoritarian alignment.
These exchanges emphasized that NATO exists to preserve peace. After 75 years, it remains the strongest alliance in the world.
