Members of ParlAmericas’ Canadian Section to Attend Parliamentary Gathering During the Ninth Summit of the Americas

On 6 and 7 June 2022, Marc G. Serré, MP, Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas, will lead a delegation to a Parliamentary Gathering that will occur during the Ninth Summit of the Americas, to be held in Los Angeles, California. On 8 June, members of the Canadian Section will attend the Sixth Young Americas Forum that is part of the Summit. The other delegates are Senator Rosa Galvez, Vice-Chair of the Canadian Section and President of ParlAmericas' Parliamentary Network on Climate Change, Richard Cannings, MP, Rob Morrison, MP, and Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, MP.

Marc Serré commented: “Members of ParlAmericas attending events held during the Summit of the Americas – including from the Canadian Section – recognize the benefits of collaborative work with legislators from across the hemisphere. While ParlAmericas does not currently have a formal role at the Summit, the national parliaments of the Americas have, through ParlAmericas, demonstrated their commitment to engagement with the Summit process.”

“Previous Summits of the Americas have resulted in major achievements in upholding democratic values and protecting human rights, both of which have benefited the citizens of our countries. ParlAmericas’ members recognize that parliaments are critical in ensuring the successful implementation of a number of the commitments that emerge from the Summits,” concluded Marc Serré.

The theme for the Parliamentary Gathering is “Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future.” Among other activities, delegates will participate in sessions that discuss democracy and combatting corruption, “green energy” commitments adopted by legislatures, countering disinformation and promoting transparency through digitizing legislatures, enhancing inclusive democratic engagement, and democratic resilience during health crises.

At the Summit of the Americas’ Youth Americas Forum, delegates will attend sessions focusing on such topics as health and resilience in the Americas, connectivity and digital transformation, and the role of sports in social and economic development.
