Canadian parliamentarians to attend ParlAmericas’ Annual Plenary Assembly in Paraguay
From October 30 to November 1, 2019, the Honourable Rosa Galvez, Senator, Vice-Chair of the Canadian Section of ParlAmericas and Vice-President (North America) of ParlAmericas' Parliamentary Network on Climate Change, will lead a delegation to Asunción, Paraguay for ParlAmericas’ 16th Plenary Assembly. Senator Galvez will be accompanied by the Honourable Percy E. Downe, Senator.
This year's plenary assembly will examine the ways in which legislators can contribute to progress on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a global framework focused on achieving 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Legislators from across the Americas and the Caribbean will discuss tools and approaches, as well as obstacles they have faced, towards attaining SDGs relating to gender equality, climate change and strong institutions.
Senator Galvez will facilitate a workshop about SDG 5, gender equality, which is a foundation for achieving the other 16 SDGs. Delegates will also attend a workshop designed to improve their capacity to evaluate the potential contributions that budgetary proposals could make to accomplishing the 2030 Agenda.
“While progress is being made, much more work remains to be done rapidly in all countries in order for the SDGs to be achieved by 2030,” noted Senator Galvez. “At ParlAmericas’ 16th Plenary Assembly, legislators from across the Americas and the Caribbean should move beyond rhetoric and focus on tangible actions to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda,” she concluded.
