SUMMARY

This enactment amends paragraph 207(4)‍(b) of the Criminal Code to make it lawful for the government of a province or territory, or a licensed person or entity, to conduct and manage in the province or territory a lottery scheme that involves betting on a race — other than a horse-race — or fight, or on a single sport event or athletic contest.

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

R.‍S.‍, c. 52 (1st Supp.‍), s. 3

1Paragraph 207(4)‍(b) of the Criminal Code is replaced by the following:

  • (b)bookmaking, pool selling or the making or recording of bets, including bets made through the agency of a pool or pari-mutuel system, on any Insertion start horse- Insertion end race; or

2Section 1 comes into force on a day to be fixed by order of the Governor in Council.

EXPLANATORY NOTES

Criminal Code
Clause 1:Relevant portion of subsection 207(4):

(4)In this section, lottery scheme means a game or any proposal, scheme, plan, means, device, contrivance or operation described in any of paragraphs 206(1)‍(a) to (g), whether or not it involves betting, pool selling or a pool system of betting other than

  • .‍.‍. 

  • (b)bookmaking, pool selling or the making or recording of bets, including bets made through the agency of a pool or pari-mutuel system, on any race or fight, or on a single sport event or athletic contest; or
