Preamble
|
|
WHEREAS the Parliament of Canada recognizes that the principles set out in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples should be enshrined in the laws of Canada;
|
|

NOW, THEREFORE, Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate and House of Commons of Canada, enacts as follows:

|

1. This Act may be cited as the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

2. The Government of Canada shall take all measures necessary to ensure that the laws of Canada are consistent with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples that was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations as General Assembly Resolution 61/295 on September 13, 2007 and that is set out in the schedule to this Act.

2. Le gouvernement du Canada prend toutes les mesures nécessaires pour veiller à ce que les lois fédérales soient compatibles avec la Déclaration sur les droits des peuples autochtones adoptée par l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies le 13 septembre 2007 conformément à sa résolution 61/295 et dont le texte est reproduit à l’annexe de la présente loi.

3. At the end of the fiscal year beginning on April 1, 2009, and at the end of each of the next four fiscal years, the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development shall prepare a report reviewing the progress made by the Government of Canada in ensuring that the laws of Canada are consistent with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples during that fiscal year, and shall cause the report to be laid before each House of Parliament within sixty days after the end of that fiscal year or, if that House is not then sitting, on any of the first fifteen days next thereafter that the House is sitting.

3. À la fin de l’exercice commençant le 1er avril 2009 et à la fin de chacun des quatre exercices suivants, le ministre des Affaires indiennes et du Nord canadien établit un rapport faisant état des progrès réalisés par le gouvernement du Canada pour assurer la compatibilité des lois fédérales avec la Déclaration sur les droits des peuples autochtones au cours de l’exercice. Il fait déposer le rapport devant chaque chambre du Parlement dans les soixante jours suivant la fin de chaque exercice ou, si elle ne siège pas, dans les quinze premiers jours de séance ultérieurs.
